Hailee Steinfeld, 14, was first announced as the new face of Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2011 in May this year, taking over Lindsey Wixson who was one year older than Hailee is now when she first fronted the Miu Miu ad campaigns more than a year ago.

In the latest Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2011 ad campaign, Hailee Steinfeld makes her first appearance as the face of Miu Miu. The ad campaign was shot by Bruce Weber who took over the reins from Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot and styled by Joe McKenna. The images were meant to channel a forties film noir mood but I’m not sure about the first few photos which were very country-inspired and rustic with the greenery and railway tracks. It started to fit the mood only when she enters a house -and eats a slice of pizza. Yes you read right, there’s a photo of her eating pizza! How peculiar. The photos of her posing outside the house were incredible, totally refreshing but not film noir. Forties? Yes maybe. I just wished they did all the shots in the house and darkened the lighting a little. If you can visualise that, I think you would have a better sense of where this collection is coming from. That aside, this collection is super!

So how does Hailee Steinfeld fare in this one? Here’s a little background information on how she got the gig. Miuccia Prada first noticed Hailee wearing her creations and loved how she wore them so much that she invited her to attend the Miu Miu show in Paris. From there, a partnership blossomed. Here’s a look at some of her appearances on the red carpet.

Credit or no credit to Hailee’s stylist, Karla Welch. If you have seen more photos of Hailee Steinfeld on the red carpet, you will notice how she is slowly aging or maturing if you will and she’s only 14! Girls her age should dress her age. In the above ads, she has aged at least 10 years. I don’t know if it’ll bode well for Miu Miu’s cause because although Miu Miu is Prada’s more youthful line, she is just simply too young for that. I mean if maybe a young unknown model who poses for these ads and looks older (like Lindsey Wixson for Miu Miu), it’s definitely fine but I’m sure most people would have identified this young girl as the star of True Grit who is incidentally very young. If you are a twenty-something customer who sees Hailee Steinfeld in these ads, what would you think? Awkward moment, uneasiness? But the bottom line is that this Miu Miu collection definitely needs a more suitable person to model.

I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem to work for me. Of course, Hailee’s not the only one who has been in this situation. Dakota Fanning made her first appearance in Marc Jacobs ads when she was just 13 and her younger sister Elle Fanning, 12, is currently Rodarte’s muse. Rodarte can get away with that as their line is more youthful and Elle does look somewhat age-appropriate but not Marc Jacobs! That was major if you remember the controversy back then and now Dakota’s back as the face of the Marc Jacobs’ Oh, Lola! fragrance with the bottle stuck between her legs!

I think the ‘want’ to be different and the idea of nonconformity is what appeals to these designers. With respect to that, I think it is relatable, everybody wants publicity. I was going to write that lines have to be drawn but with nonconformity, I think there are no boundaries. Just like fashion.
