Giambattista Valli Couture Fall 2011

Giambattista Valli finally made his debut in couture by staging his first ever Giambattista Valli Couture Fall 2011 show in Paris. Having worked under Emanuel Ungaro -who apprenticed under Cristobal Balenciaga- where he helmed the ready-to-wear line and honed his craft before deciding to start his eponymous label in 2005, couture was always present in his veins; so it was no surprise that the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture finally came knocking.

Giambattista Valli presented a collection of 45 looks which were based around the tunic shirt of the atelier worker. Translated into a skirt in the first look, the collection slowly blossomed as he churned out loose tunic dresses and that fitted and trapeze silhouette that is a favourite of his. Floral embellishments, beadwork and huge bow ruffles in a sea of white, black, pink coral and red adorned dresses that remind you of Valentino’s grace.

Dresses mostly came in two colours to keep the looks simple and polished, letting the elegance of the silhouette -that were decorated with ostrich feathers and floral appliques- speak for themselves. Headpieces and makeup were kept subtle; a smart move to draw the audience’s attention to the clothes. These were accessorised with metal belts and necklaces that were created by his partner and jewelry designer Luigi Scialanga. Then came the segment of dresses in leopard prints where the silhouette changed to an old 50′s couture with generous amounts of fabric. What was sorely missed in the house of Valentino when the great Valentino Garavani left, was certainly present here at Giambattista Valli Couture.

What Giambattista Valli did was prove to the fashion world that he could do couture; it was an affirmation. What he did was inject his usual ready-to-wear with the couture element. With these looks, he not only proved that couture is in his blood but also proved that couture is not a dead-end business that gets featured in retrospectives. It was a first and confident outing and we can only look forward.

‘The most beautiful thing about the couture is the devotion.’ -Giambattista Valli

No surprises then that Princess Charlotte Casiraghi choose to wear Giambattista Valli Couture to her Uncle’s wedding last week.

And last year if you remember, Charlotte Dellal -designer of London shoe brand Charlotte Olympia- wore an amazing voluminous Giambattista Valli wedding gown on her nuptials.

Probably of sign of things to come from the Italian maestro that is Giambattista Valli.

Jil Sander Navy Fall 2011 Ad Campaign | Arizona Muse

Arizona Muse is the new face of the latest Jil Sander Navy Fall 2011 ad campaign. Shot by Willy Vanderperre, who also shot the Jil Sander Fall 2011 ad campaign, Arizona Muse channels androgyny with wet tousled hair in black and white imagery. Amazing collaboration.

The Jil Sander Navy Fall 2011 ads have a very similar creative direction to the debut Spring 2011 ads which Valerija Kelava fronted. Shot by David Sims, you almost would have thought that they belonged to the same campaign.

Following the end of the Jil Sander and Uniqlo +J collaboration with the last collection being Fall 2011, Jil Sander Navy could be the next answer to having ‘affordable’ Jil Sander. Although the +J collaboration was designed by Jil Sander herself and not Raf Simons, the Jil Sander minimalist aesthetic was still present through and through.

My guess is that talk of having a lower-priced diffusion line has been going on for a while and the launch of Jil Sander Navy was timed to coincide with the departure of the +J collaboration to avoid competition, after all, +J is still priced cheaper than Jil Sander Navy. Case in point, Jil Sander Navy was launched for Spring 2011 in January this year targeted at younger, more casual customers and is reasonable priced at $125 for a shirt to $795 for a coat. Probably one of the lower price points for designer diffusion lines out there.

Contrary to the ad campaigns, there are actually more colours in the collection. Looks set to be a hit, comparable to T by Alexander Wang. Affordable, simple, chic and easy to wear. Take a look at some of the outfits of the Spring 2011 collection below.

Emma Watson | Harper’s Bazaar August 2011

emma-watson-harper's-bazaar-august2011-1

Emma Watson graces yet another cover in the build-up to the premiere of the last installment of the Harry Potter franchise. This time Emma Watson fronts two covers for Harper’s Bazaar August 2011 in a theme that is overdone and oh so cliché -naughty versus nice girl/bad versus good girl/evil versus demure girl, whichever you prefer.

Shot by Alexi Lubomirski, Emma Watson models the latest Autumn/Winter 2011 collections including a white Yves Saint Laurent dress on the good girl cover and a black Emilio Pucci dress on the bad girl cover. She’s wearing a black bowl cut wig in the ‘bad-girl’ photos which is totally bugging me. They should have just done all good girl shots but it is still a tad stale to me. The editorial also comes with an accompanying interview where she talks about school, fashion, growing up and acting. What do you think, yes or no?

This is not the first time Emma Watson is featured in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar. Her first outing came in the Harper’s Bazaar October 2008 issue where U.K.’s top designers were featured in an editorial spread shot by Simon Procter. The creative direction was in reference to the Harry Potter films and the editorial aptly titled -The Magic Of Fashion. It was just pretty frocks set against a vivid background; she didn’t have to do much. I like this one a lot. Do you?
