Gucci Spring/Summer 2013 Ad Campaign | Anja Rubik and Karmen Pedaru by Mert & Marcus

Gucci Spring/Summer 2013 ad campaign, Anja Rubik, Karmen Pedaru, Mert & Marcus, Mario Testino

Gone with the highly stylized ad campaigns of recent seasons’ past and in with a straightforward studio shoot sans props. The Gucci Spring/Summer 2013 ad campaign brought back memories of ad campaigns during Tom Ford circa Gucci when he first enlisted the help of Mario Testino and Carine Roitfeld somewhere around the mid-nineties. Perhaps it was due to the 60th anniversary of the 1953 Gucci Horsebit loafer that prompted a reference into the archives.

This time Anja Rubik and Karmen Pedaru replaces the cool nineties glamour of Amber Valetta as Mert & Marcus make easy work here. Interesting that the aesthetic remained the same –as did the ever timeless Horsebit loafer– and for the clothes, a simple palette of singular colours and silhouette shone through. But it was the nostalgic mood of yesteryears that got me the most excited.

Vogue US March 2012 | Adele by Mert & Marcus

Vogue US March 2012, Adele, Mert & Marcus

The Vogue US March 2012 cover which featured Adele was just unveiled a few days ago just as the Grammy Awards were concluded where she took home 8 awards. Kudos to Anna Wintour and her Vogue team for having such great foresight; I do believe that it is not by coincidence. Shot by Mert & Marcus, Adele looked absolutely pristine. I must say Mert & Marcus’ sharp and polished photo-editing style and Adele’s features certainly went really well together. Giorgio Armani presents the Giorgio Armani Fall/Winter 2011/2012 Boudoir collection video. Shot by Mert and Marcus, Sasha Pivovarova mesmerises alongside Diego Fragoso. Straight out of a dream, the Boudoir video is surreal and romantic and Sasha’s makeup is stunning. The Giorgio Armani Fall/Winter 2011/2012 Boudoir collection will be out on 6 October. Till then, it’s back to Fashion Week.

Kristen Stewart | W Magazine September 2011

W Magazine September 2011, Kristen Stewart, Mert and Marcus

Kristen Stewart fronts the cover of W Magazine September 2011 wearing a Max Mara mohair and wool sweater looking rather unrecognisable; quite unlike her usual self. The only recognisable part of her is probably her jawline. Shot by Mert and Marcus and styled by Edward Enninful, the Kristen Stewart for W Magazine September 2011 editorial inside reveals similar heavily airbrushed photos of the 21-year-old starlet. Yay or nay?

Yay for me and kudos to the creative team behind this cover story because to be honest, Kristen Stewart is rather nay to me most of the time. But this! This is a whole 180 degree transformation from frumpy girl to glamour girl. Quite refreshing and different. Imagine this editorial with Kristen Stewart’s real face; it’s probably going to be blah and less of a talking point in social media circles. Heavily photoshopped or not, Kristen Stewart is who she is -the cool indie kid who dresses up- but I’m glad we had a glimpse of who she could be. It’s all about styling. I just wished more photos were published. Check out the rest of the Kristen Stewart for W Magazine September 2011 editorial below.

What Lies Beneath Film by Mert & Marcus | Love Magazine #6

What Lies Beneath is the title of it photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot’s 28-page editorial in Love Magazine #6. Styled by Love Magazine Editor-in-Chief Katie GrandWhat Lies Beneath starring Mariacarla Boscono, Saskia De Brauw, Kristen McMenamyAnais Pouliot, Lara StoneGuinevere Van Seenus, Paul Boche, Xiao Wen Ju, Jed Texas and Angus Whitehead, comes with an accompanying fashion film that also marks Mert and Marcus’ first ever fashion video.

Much has been said about the source of inspiration for What Lies Beneath that is stunningly dark and visually poignant. Plagiarism or inspiration? These two issues only matter to the parties involved and serious fashion folk. To the average consumer/viewer, what matters are visually stunning images, period. Mert and Marcus’ What Lies Beneath editorial and film for Love Magazine #6 showcased that and that’s all I have to say.
