Hailee Steinfeld for Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2011

Hailee Steinfeld Miu Miu1 F/W 2011

Hailee Steinfeld, 14, was first announced as the new face of Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2011 in May this year, taking over Lindsey Wixson who was one year older than Hailee is now when she first fronted the Miu Miu ad campaigns more than a year ago.

In the latest Miu Miu Fall/Winter 2011 ad campaign, Hailee Steinfeld makes her first appearance as the face of Miu Miu. The ad campaign was shot by Bruce Weber who took over the reins from Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot and styled by Joe McKenna. The images were meant to channel a forties film noir mood but I’m not sure about the first few photos which were very country-inspired and rustic with the greenery and railway tracks. It started to fit the mood only when she enters a house -and eats a slice of pizza. Yes you read right, there’s a photo of her eating pizza! How peculiar. The photos of her posing outside the house were incredible, totally refreshing but not film noir. Forties? Yes maybe. I just wished they did all the shots in the house and darkened the lighting a little. If you can visualise that, I think you would have a better sense of where this collection is coming from. That aside, this collection is super!

‘I had such an amazing experience working with the Miu Miu team on this new campaign. It’s so much fun to have the chance to work with such a gifted designer and wear these incredible clothes. I feel so lucky to be a part of it.’ -Hailee Steinfeld

So how does Hailee Steinfeld fare in this one? Here’s a little background information on how she got the gig. Miuccia Prada first noticed Hailee wearing her creations and loved how she wore them so much that she invited her to attend the Miu Miu show in Paris. From there, a partnership blossomed. Here’s a look at some of her appearances on the red carpet.

Credit or no credit to Hailee’s stylist, Karla Welch. If you have seen more photos of Hailee Steinfeld on the red carpet, you will notice how she is slowly aging or maturing if you will and she’s only 14! Girls her age should dress her age. In the above ads, she has aged at least 10 years. I don’t know if it’ll bode well for Miu Miu’s cause because although Miu Miu is Prada’s more youthful line, she is just simply too young for that. I mean if maybe a young unknown model who poses for these ads and looks older (like Lindsey Wixson for Miu Miu), it’s definitely fine but I’m sure most people would have identified this young girl as the star of True Grit who is incidentally very young. If you are a twenty-something customer who sees Hailee Steinfeld in these ads, what would you think? Awkward moment, uneasiness? But the bottom line is that this Miu Miu collection definitely needs a more suitable person to model.

I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem to work for me. Of course, Hailee’s not the only one who has been in this situation. Dakota Fanning made her first appearance in Marc Jacobs ads when she was just 13 and her younger sister Elle Fanning, 12, is currently Rodarte’s muse. Rodarte can get away with that as their line is more youthful and Elle does look somewhat age-appropriate but not Marc Jacobs! That was major if you remember the controversy back then and now Dakota’s back as the face of the Marc Jacobs’ Oh, Lola! fragrance with the bottle stuck between her legs!

I think the ‘want’ to be different and the idea of nonconformity is what appeals to these designers. With respect to that, I think it is relatable, everybody wants publicity. I was going to write that lines have to be drawn but with nonconformity, I think there are no boundaries. Just like fashion.

With the stunning photo of Emma Watson by Mario Testino on the cover of Vogue US July 2011 on everyone’s lips, I would like to divert your attention to a beautiful and captivating film noir inspired editorial within the pages of that very issue. This editorial features Lara Stone in the leading role and Frida Gustavsson in fall’s latest collections accompanied by actor Alexander Skarsgard. Styled by Grace Coddington, a subtle melodramatic story of a femme fatale entitled Spellbound is told through the lens of Peter Lindbergh with significant usage of low-key lighting. Enjoy!

Glad that they included a black and white photo, it wouldn’t be film noir without it. And I think I might just know what I want to do for my next collection for school. Love the calm grandeur and Lara’s alluring gaze. Kudos to the team for going one up; a perfect complement to the cover.

Emma Watson for Vogue

I had to double-take when I first saw the cover of  Vogue US July 2011. With hair sleeked back (she still has a short pixie hairdo) and dark red lips, it is a side of Emma Watson that few have seen. At the age of 21, Emma Watson bags her first Vogue cover in the American edition for the month of July 2011. Photographed by Mario Testino, Emma is dressed in Prada Fall 2011 for the cover shoot. I really like this cover. Emma Watson all grown up (I know cliché) and glamourous. It’s one of those covers that you won’t get sick of looking at. One of the best covers so far this year from Vogue and of course I adore anything that Mario Testino shoots.

Emma in a Aquilano.Rimondi dress, Solange Azagury-Partridge accessories and jewel encrusted Alexander McQueen thigh-high boots.

Emma in a Calvin Klein Fall 2011 dress, Lynn Ban bracelets and Miu Miu heels.

Emma in a Tom Ford top and Undercover skirt carrying a Louis Vuitton clutch.

In the accompanying article, Emma talks about her love for the arts-she’s a painter, the Harry Potter franchise and her struggles balancing work and education as well as her personal life. It was a very intimate interview and I like Vogue US for that. Read the full article, Emma Watson’s New Day at vogue.com

Although this is her first cover for Vogue, Emma previously appeared in an editorial in Vogue Italia back in September 2008. This marks the first time she has worked with Vogue. Photographed by Mark Seliger, Emma models couture. I believe this is probably her first major break in her dabble with fashion.

‘I’ve been focusing on art a lot, and fashion’s a great extension of that’ -Emma Watson

Since then, Emma Watson has ventured further in fashion; being involved in various editorials. Apart from being photographed by Karl Lagefeld for Crash magazine, she also landed a contract to launch three collections for fair trade and eco-friendly label People Tree (her third and final collection was launched early this year), including a collaboration with Alberta Ferretti. She was also most noted for becoming the face of Burberry’s Autumn/Winter 2009 and Spring/Summer 2010 ad campaigns (ads shot by Mario Testino) and most recently signed a contract to be the face of Lancôme (ads also shot by Mario Testino).

Harry Potter, fashion designing and modeling, education at an Ivy League college (although she put that on hold for a while), she certainly has a lot on her plate! An inspiration for all aspiring upstarts. And I thought juggling writing/blogging, school and part-time work was hard.

*Update* Check out Lara Stone in a film noir inspired editorial in the very same issue of Vogue.

Florence Welch for Gucci

The amazing Florence Welch, 24, front woman of indie band Florence + The Machine was chosen as the new face and muse of Gucci by Frida Giannini to mark Gucci’s 90th anniversary. The pair had met at this year’s Grammys where Frida was captivated by the singer’s presence. ‘She has a powerful personality and an entrancing quality to her performances. She also has that confident and self assured look that goes hand in hand with the Gucci woman,’ Frida said in an interview with Dazed Digital. Heck, the Gucci Fall/Winter 2011/2012 collection was even inspired by her. ‘As I was imagining this collection I was thinking of a strong and somewhat mysterious muse. Florence is that kind of woman,’ added Frida.

Of course Florence is no stranger to fashion. Topshop apparently custom-made her entire wardrobe for Glastonbury 2009 when Florence + The Machine was beginning to make their mark. Am really looking forward to what Frida and Florence will come up with. But to be honest these designer-muse pair-ups only excite me for that particular season or two, after that it just dies down and becomes less interesting. Elle Fanning for Rodarte, Blake Lively for Chanel to name a couple. The other pairing that I’m excited about is Hailee Steinfeld for Miu Miu. Fashion moves fast and so does a designer’s muse. Here are some of Florence Welch’s stunning looks.

Florence at the Met Gala 2011 in Yves Saint Laurent.

Florence at the Oscars 2011 in Valentino Couture.

Florence at the Grammys 2011 in Givenchy.

Florence in Valentino outside the Valentino F/W 2011/2012 show in Paris.

Florence at the Givenchy F/W 2011/2012 show in Paris.

Florence at the Chanel dinner in honour of Blake Lively at Paris Fashion Week.

Such impeccable style makes one wonder if Florence Welch has a stylist and the answer is yes. Her name is Aldene Johnson, check out Aldene’s other work here. And you have got to check out her input in this video where she was the art director alongside Louise Corcoran. Brilliant stuff.

Fans of Florence should also check out this interview from 2009 by the Daily Mail.

And one more to keep-a tumblr dedicated to Florence Welch.
