Vogue UK January 2013 | Dior in Vogue: the archive

Vogue UK January 2013, Dior in Vogue: the archive, Kate Upton, Alasdair McLellan

Dior in Vogue: the archive is presented alongside the Raf Simons feature which can only be found in the digital edition of Vogue UK January 2013. The grandeur amounts of fabric and exquisite French elegance as seen through the years since 1946, collated in the pages of Vogue. See designs from the likes of Christian Dior himself to Gianfranco Ferré, Marc Bohan, and John Galliano; modelled by Jean Shrimpton, Jane Birkin, and Linda Evangelista among many others; and shot by photographers including Irving Penn, Craig McDean, David Bailey, and Patrick Demarchelier to name a few.

These models of yesteryear bring me back to the cover of Vogue UK January 2013, which features Kate Upton in a demure Alaîa dress shot by Alasdair McLellan. As you would have already known, there are two camps: one for Kate Upton’s ‘refreshing body image’ in high fashion and the other against her ‘unconventional’ measurements going against what is deemed the ‘standard’. While we can’t possible predict the future shift in industry standards, one thing’s for sure; waif or curvy, these Dior creations are gorgeous either way.

Vogue US September 2012 | The Vogue 120 by Norman Jean Roy

Vogue US September 2012 cover, Vogue US, Mert and Marcus, Lady Gaga

Sports is out! Fall is in! The conclusion of the London 2012 Olympic Games brings us to the onslaught of ultra thick September issues and no prizes for guessing who is the winner here. The Vogue US September 2012 issue is literally the biggest issue yet with 916 pages, surpassing the previous world record held by the Vogue US September issue of 2007 by a whooping 76 pages!

How apt as well, that Vogue celebrates its 120th anniversary this very month; yes the magazine was founded in September of 1892. Out of all the fashion publications out there, –at the top of my head– only Harper’s Bazaar can claim an earlier birth date.

Lady Gaga graces the cover for the second time in Marc Jacobs but the highlight for me has got to be The Vogue 120: The Stylish Singers, Designers, Actors, Models, and More (Under 45) of the Moment. Hitting all the nails on the head, this list is essentially a names-you-need-to-know list. Sadly, not all of them made it to the editorial; imagine if they all did!

Vogue US July 2012 | Emma Stone by Mario Testino

Emma Stone, Vogue US July 2012, Mario Testino

In case you missed it, Emma Stone makes her all-important Vogue debut on the cover of Vogue US July 2012. I never thought Emma Stone would be one for the big leagues but I guess you never know. From Superbad to Zombieland to more credible and serious roles in Easy A, Crazy, Stupid, Love and The Help and finally to mainstream commercial success in The Amazing Spiderman. Not bad for an actress who made her feature film debut in 2007 and is now only 23 years of age.

Shot by Mario Testino for the pages of Vogue US July 2012, Emma Stone dons a variety of Annie Hall meets couture glamour outfits from the likes of Jil Sander, Versus and Dries Van Noten among others.

“Nathan Heller encounters the actress at the cusp of a pivotal transformation in her young career, after earning her reputation as Hollywood’s go-to girl for strong, spunky characters bridging unreconciled worlds, going brunette for her Superbad audition and making her move from comedy to The Help.” -Vogue US

Vogue Paris June/July 2012 | Gisele Bündchen by Inez and Vinoodh

Vogue Paris June / July 2012, Gisele Bündchen, Inez and Vinoodh, Emmanuelle Alt

The Vogue Paris June/July 2012 issue is one magazine that is surely on everyone’s lips. If it’s not the sand on cover star Gisele Bündchen’s butt cheeks getting your attention, it is the toned bare back of the supermodel, who at 31 and a mother of one, is still looking as good as when she first came on the scene more than 10 years ago. Shot by Inez and Vinoodh, Gisele Bündchen is styled by none other than Emmanuelle Alt who I must say is finally coming into her own after surpassing the one year mark as editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris as of the April 2012 issue.

The Vogue Paris June/July 2012 issue also marks the first Health Initiative issue which is a pact between the 19 international editors of Vogue to encourage a healthier approach to body image within the industry. Read the full Health Initiative agreement and Anna Wintour’s letter on the issue.

With most magazines having either a sports-themed (with the Olympics around the corner) or resort-themed (June being Summer issues) main editorial, I daresay this editorial is a clear winner. Check out the full 21-page editorial featuring Gisele Bündchen by Inez and Vinoodh for Vogue Paris June/July 2012 below.

Vogue US June 2012 | Karlie Kloss and America’s Top Male Olympians by Annie Leibovitz

Vogue US June 2012, Annie Leibovitz, Karlie Kloss, Jonathan Horton

The Vogue US June 2012 issue puts the spotlight on America’s top male Olympians with Summer upon those in the Northern hemisphere and with the London 2012 Olympic Games exactly 72 days away. Karlie Kloss joins Jonathan Horton, Ashton Eaton, Ryan Lochte (who is also now the fourth man after Richard Gere, George Clooney and LeBron James to appear on a Vogue US cover), the Bryan brothers and Dwyane Wade in this sports-themed editorial spread shot by Annie Leibovitz.

The almost separate entities of sportsman and high fashion model with Karlie Kloss as a hurdle, on a basketball hoop and on parallel bars does it for me. Check out the rest of the Vogue US June 2012 editorial featuring Karlie Kloss and America’s top male Olympians by Annie Leibovitz as well as a behind-the-scenes video of the shoot below.
